**All metals are prone to discoloration over time due to a chemical reaction called oxidation. When metals are exposed to oxygen, water, sweat, lotions, and even oils from your own skin it will oxidize.
Most of the items we make have a patina already applied to them, but if the piece is left out and exposed to oxygen, the patina will naturally darken. Copper will turn a deep, rich brown color at times resembling leather or even wood.
Do not expose your piece to water. Activities such as swimming, showering, cleaning, cooking and exercising can cause your piece to degrade over time and should be avoided.
Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals like household detergents.
You may clean your piece with a simple microfiber polishing cloth.

Meet the Maker
Thank you for taking the time to learn about my work. I am a visually impaired silversmith based in East Tennessee, not far from Chattanooga. Although I've only been working with metal for a few years, I've always been an artist in one capacity or another. As a child I learned how to sketch from my grandfather who was an artist, sign painter and, who his family believes, was the inventor of the first bottle jack. He was a pretty amazing guy. I've also been a photographer which is a medium I really miss.
Not long ago the lens in the right eye detached and because I don't have a lens in my left eye, it has left me pretty dependent on other people, mostly my husband. I don’t know how life would be without his support.
Probably the worst thing you can do to a visual artist is to take away their ability to see, but because I am just that stubborn, I decided that I wasn't going to let this problem defeat me. I pulled out the old stereo microscope and purchased a micro welder. With perseverance and a few specialized tools to assist me, I am able to create what I visualize in my mind.
My pieces have evolved into wearable art inspired by nature. I love the organic shapes and textures of the natural world, and I strive to capture those elements in my work. I use a variety of techniques to achieve my desired effect, including hammering, soldering, and polishing. I am always experimenting with new designs and materials, and I am excited to see where my work will take me in the future.

How it’s Made
This ring started with a raw sheet of copper. Scratches and imperfections or sanded and polished out of the metal which is then heated and softened with a jewelers torch.
The pattern is then imprinted into the soft metal. This is done by pressing the copper sheet against a hand-carved steel plate, transferring the Victorian design onto the metal, then hand sawn.
The skull was made by melting sterling silver scraps that were pressed by hand into a jewelers die, impressing the metal with the skull design. A hole was drilled into the ring and a sterling wire was soldered on to the back of the skull. The skull was then riveted on to the ring. As an added measure of security, the rivet was then soldered to the ring from the back.
It is filed, sanded and refined, then cleaned in preparation for the coating. The coating is sifted on using enamel sifters, then baked in an oven until it cures. Once the piece is removed from the oven and cooled it is then shaped into its final form.
Lastly, the entire piece is polished to a brushed finish, which gives it a soft, matte look. The patina is removed from the high relief areas allowing the intricate details to shine.
The result is a piece that is left with specific tooling marks reflecting the metalsmithing process, with each step contributing to the overall beauty and uniqueness of the piece. It’s a wearable work of art that tells a story of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
